If you want full control over branding, marketing, and customer experience, building your own store is ideal. However, this requires a lot resources, time, and skills.

On the other hand, third-party marketplaces like Amazon or Etsy, or even Facehook Shop or TikTok Shop simplify things but limit your growth and branding opportunities. Well, for beginners or those with limited skills and budgets, third party marketplaces can be a great starting point.

How would you decide between creating your own store or selling on a marketplace?
 
Choosing between your own store and third-party marketplaces depends on control, costs, and audience reach. Your store offers brand control but needs traffic efforts; marketplaces give instant exposure but less control.
 
That's very true. But I also believe that you should begin with third party marketplace. That's because it is low cost and even when you made a loss, you will have lower loss. With self hosted store, your loss could go as high as $1000.
 
The thing is that selling on marketplaces is easy and instant exposure but comes with fees and competition. I will prefer to build my own website as it will gives me full control over branding and customer relationships though it requires effort to drive traffic

True. But just by having full control does not guarantee sales. What ultimately matters is whether you have good visibility or not, be it on third party marketplace or on your self hosted store

However, we must remember the fact that no matter where you sell, you must market your products, even if you sell on third-party online stores.
