Consistent activity, recognizable members, good moderation, and a clear niche matter far more than flashy design. Most dead forums fail because they never create the habit of people wanting to return daily.
I think repeat visitors mostly come from feeling connected to the people and culture of a forum, not just the topics. Good discussions matter, but consistency matters more. If users expect replies, recognition, and ongoing conversations, they return naturally. Onboarding is huge too because ignored first posts often permanently lose potential long-term members.
