Backlinks are one of the main criteria to rank high on search engines. If you have very good content that is optimized for search engine but you don’t have backlinks, it can be really hard to rank well. Generally speaking, organic backlinks are the best option, however, if you are not getting any organic backlink you can also build them by publishing content on other websites (guest posts, question and answer site, etc.), using forum signatures, blog commenting, etc. When building backlinks, always focus on authoritative sites in your niche.

By the way, what is your favourite way to build backlinks?

My favorite ways to build backlinks are creating high-quality content that others naturally reference, guest posting on relevant blogs, and participating in forums or communities where I can share expertise. For example, detailed travel guides or food recipes from my blogs often get linked by other sites because they provide real value. I also reach out to niche influencers or websites for collaborations, which can generate authoritative backlinks without spamming.

I completely agree that backlinks remain one of the most important ranking factors in SEO. Even if your content is top-notch and fully optimized, without quality backlinks, it can be challenging to reach higher positions on search engines. In my experience, the most effective way to build backlinks is a combination of guest posting and strategic outreach. By contributing valuable, relevant articles to authoritative websites within your niche, not only do you gain backlinks, but you also establish credibility and expand your network.
I also use Q&A platforms like Quora and niche-specific forums to share insights and link back to relevant content on my site. This method works well when you provide genuine, helpful answers rather than just dropping links, as search engines reward natural and contextual backlinks. Blog commenting can also be useful, especially when you target high-authority blogs in your field, but it should be done thoughtfully to avoid spammy tactics.

I have a few websites we exchange links with, use featured.com, which has a few decent links among some low-quality ones, I also do press releases.

I think that blog posting is a great way to add backlinks to your blog or website. This can greatly help you gain some traffic. Having said that, it is not a guaranteed way of generating traffic. This is why many bloggers rely on guest posting and they utilise blogs of others to add links to their blogs, which can greatly help them generate enough traffic if they have enough readership. This also depends a lot on the bounce rate of the blog. If you are publishing content on other's blogs, then they shouldn't have a high bounce rate and their readership level should be very high. They must have an exceptionally high click through rate.

I prefer building backlinks through guest posting on relevant blogs, creating shareable high-quality content, and collaborating with industry influencers. Participating in forums, offering expert insights, and using resource pages also help. I always focus on relevance, authority, and natural linking rather than shortcuts.
