In digital marketing, some say it’s smarter to specialize in one niche (like SEO or email), while others diversify. Do you position yourself as a specialist or a generalist, and how has it impacted results?

Well, I don't classify myself as an specialist but I am trying hard for specialization in digital marketing and advertising. When you are an specialist, a lot of opportunities are opened for you. Even when you do digital marketing for yourself, you will be able to generate a lot of sales, and traffic and engagements.

If you have knowledge about a certain field or niche, then it is highly recommended that you create a niche-based blog. This will help you focus on specific niche and you will be able to progress more based on your skillset and potential. This is what many experts do. They create a specific platform where many people can gain knowledge. Eventually you may be able to earn affiliate commissions once your blog gains convertible traffic that generates sales.

Back in the day you could get away with being a jack of all trades. Now, as all sub-niches are getting so specific, ideally you choose a type of service and just go crazy deep into specializing yourself.

I used to do web design (well, still do), am more than competent in forum management, graphic (logo) design, CRO etc. But I have specialized myself in SEO and in the past years this has been my main occupation.

As soon as you get seen as an expert, you can demand better prices and be able to provide a top-service.

I think both approaches have their advantages, but it depends a lot on the stage you're at and the type of clients or projects you want to attract. In my experience, specializing in an area like SEO allows you to stand out with authority and be perceived as a leader, which makes it easier to land more specific and better-paid projects. However, having a general understanding of other branches of digital marketing like email, social media, or PPC has helped me provide a more comprehensive service. I'd say I position myself as a specialist with a generalist vision.
