A forum is a place where people engage in various kinds of discussions. However, there are times when a forum many have many subtypes of forums called "subforums". These subforums are specific sections of forums that may lead to a different category of forum. These subforums may be based on subdomain.

Having subforums can improve organization when topics become numerous. They help users navigate to relevant discussions quickly, increasing engagement. However, too many subforums can cause confusion. It is better to start with a few focused sections and expand as activity grows, adjusting the layout based on user interests and participation patterns.

Some categories are very board, so you might need multiple forums or sub forums under it. For instance, for a health category, you can have forums and sub forums like mental health, fitness, diet, etc.
These subforums may be based on subdomain.
There is no need to create subforums in a subdomain, you can do it within your main forum, using subdomain for every forum you want to create is not viable.

I think subforums make sense when a community starts growing and topics get messy. If everything is mixed in one place, conversations get buried and people lose interest. But if a forum is still small, too many sections can make it feel empty.
