SEO takes time, but marketers still need to make decisions. At what point do you conclude that a strategy isn't working? How do you distinguish between normal ranking fluctuations and genuine problems that require a change in direction?
Usually you need at least 3 to 6 months before judging an SEO strategy, since search engines take time to crawl, index, and test changes. For competitive niches, it can take longer. Early fluctuations are normal, so short-term results often don’t reflect the real direction of performance.
I usually give an SEO strategy several months before deciding it isn't working, unless there's a clear technical issue. I don't react to short-term ranking fluctuations. Instead, I watch long-term trends in rankings, organic traffic, impressions, and conversions. If those metrics remain stagnant or decline despite consistent optimization, I revisit the strategy and look for gaps in content, technical SEO, or search intent.
