I think the best topics are the ones people can keep discussing long after the first post. When starting a new community, I focus on recurring questions, shared experiences, and ongoing challenges rather than news or one-time events. A community grows when its topics encourage participation, not just information consumption.
I usually start with the people I want to attract rather than trying to cover everything. I focus on topics they're most likely to search for, discuss, and come back to regularly. It's better to have a few active categories with great conversations than dozens that rarely get used.
