Ads, subscriptions, and premium features can sustain a forum but also hurt trust. Where is the line between sustainable monetization and user frustration? Have you seen communities successfully monetize without losing engagement or authenticity?

It works when monetization is built around respect for the user experience. Communities stay healthy if most features remain accessible and paid options don’t create a divide between members. Once money starts shaping who gets visibility or basic functionality, engagement usually drops because people feel the space is no longer equal.

The line is usually crossed when monetization starts affecting what users came for in the first place. If ads interrupt conversations too aggressively, or key features feel locked behind payment, people start to disengage. But when monetization stays clearly optional and doesn’t interfere with core participation, trust tends to hold.

Some communities do manage it well. The ones that work usually keep the main experience free and clean, then monetize through things like voluntary subscriptions, or cosmetic upgrades.
