Personally, I don't think it's necessarily important for a forum to have moderators and super moderators at the same time. It's an unnecessary duplication of staff position because a moderator can do exactly what a super moderator can do.

Do you support having mods and super mods in a forum?

For me yes, think that if there were no moderators a forum would be filled with spam and malicious links, perhaps with possible viruses, it would be a complete disaster and users would quickly leave the forum.

I believe having moderators and super moderators is necessary for most forums, especially as they grow. Mods help keep discussions respectful, enforce rules, and manage spam. Super mods can handle escalated issues, guide newer mods, and ensure consistency across the board. Without them, maintaining quality and order becomes very difficult.

Forum moderators are necessary for many reasons. Forum moderators not only remove spam posts, but they also check for plagiarised content as well. Forum moderators also make sure that all the members follow all the rules of the forum. So, under such kind of circumstances, forum moderators are a necessary part of running a forum.

Yes, I totally agree. Imagine a forum without moderation. It would be filled with spam messages everywhere. It would be completely crazy. So, it's essential to have good moderators.

You are correct. There are lots of work that a forum moderator does that enhance the user experience on the forum. So, having them around is of utmost importance especially on forums that are always busy and active.

If you are not giving all mod permission to your moderators, having a super moderator will all sorts of moderation permission can be justified. A lot of people are afraid to give all permission to moderators for the fear of abuse.

It really depends on the size of your forums. When the community is still small, it's a breeze to keep it on track. But, once you have thousands of people and thousands of posts/day, it gets really tough.

I used to mod in 2 HUGE communities back in the day and we had a tiered system:

- mods who would just move posts to a different hidden category (so they had no edit/delete option);
- super-mods who would be able to take over and delete the content going against the guidelines;
- admins (myself in one of the communities) and owner in others who would spam clean, ban members etc.

In most days you'd need just a little pruning, posts to be moved to the right categories or just removed from public view, in others it was almost war and you needed the entire team.

No matter how much we want (even as owners), we cannot be online 24/7, so having good mods is a blessing.

I think tier based moderation permission can be good on big communities, however, for small communities you just need moderators that have few permission to run day to day activities. if you are active on your community and if your community is comparatively small, there is no need for super mod.

I think relying on both moderators and supermoderators may be unnecessary, especially in small or medium-sized forums. A well-trained moderator can handle most situations, from reviewing content to mediating conflicts between members. However, in very large or high-traffic forums, supermoderators can help maintain consistency and coordinate the team, ensuring that the rules are uniformly enforced. Personally, I prefer to keep a simple structure at the beginning and only add additional roles if the forum grows enough for the workload to justify it. This avoids confusion and unnecessary staffing costs. It also empowers moderators to make responsible decisions without relying on a higher-level manager. For me, the key is efficiency and adapting to the actual size and needs of the forum.

I believe having moderators and super moderators is important for maintaining order and quality. Regular mods can handle day-to-day tasks like approving posts or guiding new users, while super mods manage escalated issues, enforce rules consistently, and oversee the overall community health.

The number of moderator depend a lot on the size of the community as explained by other members. The fact remains that there are different moderators who have different jobs on the forum. Not all the moderators may have the same job roles, depending on the community. Having said that, having two or three moderators on a forum where thousands of posts are being posted per day won't make much sense. You need to keep things balanced.
