Custom themes offer uniqueness but require maintenance. Are default templates sufficient for professional appearance? How much effort is reasonable to invest in visual identity without hurting performance?

Custom themes are always better and default themes are basic, however, custom themes come up with a price, and when you are working on limited resources, you will have to stay with default theme. I have custom theme on one forum and default on the other.

Custom themes definitely look better and help shape a strong identity, but they can get expensive fast. When resources are limited, sticking with the default theme is practical as long as usability stays afloat.

Default templates can look perfectly professional if they.are clean, responsive, and easy to navigate. A custom theme adds personality, but it also means more updates, debugging, and extra load on the server. I think it’s reasonable to focus on small, high-impact visual tweaks rather than a full rebuild. Simple branding, a clear layout, and fast performance often work better more than heavy design work.

Custom themes give your forum a unique look and can reinforce branding, but they require ongoing maintenance and may introduce compatibility issues. Default templates are stable, reliable, and usually easier to update, though they might look generic. The choice depends on whether you value uniqueness over simplicity and long-term stability.
