A lot of people tell that you need long content to rank high on search engines. There is a debate on how long a content should be, but it is generally believed that you need to put more than 1000 words. Some even say you need around 2500 words.
Most of the articles that appear on the first page of Google are between 1200 and 2500 words. When your content is long it is not only liked for search engines but also human readers. However, creating a long content just to meet word count is not something that is liked by search bots and human readers.
Long content will help you in your positioning in search engines, the keywords you use are also important, but as Nomad says, you must also focus on the quality of the text and not only on the length, otherwise you will be punished by search engines.
The length of content doesn't matter much like delivering high quality and relevant content. The value that the users get will determine the search ranking with Google.
For me, it is not about the length of the content. It is about giving out value in the contents that you create. And to genuinely offer value with your contents, it should be around the length of 1000 words for it to have depth.
