Xenforo is the only premium forum software I have used as a forum owner. I have used a few open source. However, I have been on communities using other premium software as a staff on multiple communities. Based on my personal experience, I can say Xenforo is the best.

Discourse excels for active, growing communities, offering flexibility and engagement tools. XenForo suits premium, polished forums, while phpBB or MyBB work for simpler or budget-conscious setups. Choice depends on goals, audience size, and desired features, but Discourse feels most future-proof.
