When members register on the forum, many forums usually just require username, email address, and password. However, I have noticed that some forums also require your date of birth as well. So, what info do you require from your forum members?

At minimum, you can collect a username, email address, and a secure password. Optional details can include location, interests, or profile picture to enhance engagement. Requirement for date of birth is to veeify age, this information can be optional. I think verifying email helps prevent spam and ensures members are genuine, keeping the community safe and trustworthy.

Many websites also require you to complete a captcha as well to prove that you are not a bot. Having said that, I have rarely seen a website asking for interests or hobbies. You can complete this after registration. Some websites also ask for real name as well. These are usually freelancing websites that are constantly seeking employees.

I’m not a forum owner, but based on my experience as a member, I believe basic information like a username, email, and password is usually enough. Some forums may ask for interests or location to personalize the experience, but keeping it minimal helps new users join without feeling overwhelmed.

The basic info that a forum should get from a member that wants to register newly should be username, email address and password. I know that some forums to prevent spam, asks intending members to explain why they want to join the forum.
