Why Do Members Read Discussions but Never Reply?

Lurkers are often treated as inactive, but many may still find value in the community. What would convince you to reply to a discussion you normally only read? Does a direct question make a difference?

I think many members read discussions without replying because they don't feel they have anything valuable to add, or they're unsure how their opinion will be received. Some are simply busy or prefer observing. A welcoming atmosphere and easy-to-answer questions can make passive readers more comfortable joining in.
