What's the difference between shared hosting and dedicated hosting?

I would like to start a website and cannot choose. Which should I buy right now? Shared hosting? Dedicated? Does it matter?

Dedicated hosting is like owning your own house; you have the entire server and its resources to yourself, offering more control and performance but at a higher cost.
